The Break Contest is held every year to give local bands
and artists a chance to play at the Surf and Skate Festival
in Asbury Park. Out of a starting lineup of 46 bands, 24
have moved on to the Semi-finals taking place at Game Changer
World in Howell, on Saturday, March 28th and Sunday, April
12th, for a chance to move on to the finals.
With a vast variety of genres and styles, the competition
started with a bang, ranging from the soft acoustic style
of Sofia Nicole to the pop-punk vibe of True Friends and
Dead Ends, all the way to the metal sounds of Lost In Translation
and Tides of Deception. Each band was allotted a thirty-minute
set, composed of three to four original songs and one cover
song of their choice. The most notable covers were Maroon
5’s “Animals” by No Parallels, Jimmy Eat
World’s “Sweetness” by Creating Clementine,
and Fall Out Boy’s “Centuries” by Lost
In Translation, all of which had the crowds screaming and
dancing along.
No Parallels
Wherever We Hail, from Howell, kicked off the final day of
round with a high energy start. The group has been a part
of the Jersey shore scene for the past five years, and were
joined by Anthony Pantina of Moral of the Story on guest vocals
during the original “Home Hearted” as well as
a brilliant cover of “1985” by Bowling for Soup.
Despite rough winter weather, all of the bands had a wonderful
turnout from friends, and family alike. During True Friends
& Dead Ends’ set, the crowd went crazy over their
cover of A Day To Remember’s “Downfall of Us
All,” and the prospect of the imminent release of
the a new EP, “Stay At Home Dads.”
At the end of the final evening of round one, Devin Striker
from No Parallels answered the ever-popular question, “What
makes performing real for you?” and as a member of
a band that has opened for Danger Kids and Jimmy Eat World,
his response was one for the books: “The energy that
the fans and our fellow friends give off. Just something
about seeing people enjoy our music and sing along to our
songs just makes you feel amazing.” It was an answer
that all of the bands could agree on in their own words.
