The
Bug Nasties - Which Way Ya Gonna Go? (www.flotationrecords.com)
Featuring smart, acerbic songwriting (any
song here, really), The Bug Nasties are arguably
America's funniest and most fearless (hopefully,
soon to be famous) explorers of current state
of teenage wasteland. "Elementary Lesson,"
"I'm Insane," or "Girl (I don't
Like You)," are pretty much self-explanatory;
yet The Bug Nasties (give these guys a gazillion
points for such a cool name) sound like their
music could have been the blueprint for "Killer"-era
Alice Cooper - atomic garage rock with nasty
punk overtones that go down good with fast
food and warm beer. While The Bug Nasties
wreck havoc through these 12 tunes, there's
still a noisy message of salvation ("Soulless
Kiss," "Night Trip," "Somethin'
Ain't Right") at the heart of their songs.
A surprising emphasis on the Farfisa organ,
courtesy of Tom Price, is weaved throughout
the album, but when James Burdyshaw fires
up his guitar and harp behind Donnie Hilstad's
drums, and Rich Creamer's bass, it's easy
to imagine yourself at the very birth of the
Garage Rock movement, back in the early 60's.
