FRETWIDE - Give Me Stereo Or Give Me Death (Courier Records)

Fretwide calls its musical style "run," a mixture of reggae beats, hip hop rhymes, acoustic guitar, and percussion. The group - four guys from Central Jersey who go by Preset, JBCyrus, B.I.G. Paw, and CK - take us through the average day in the life of a Jersey wigger - hanging out, dealing with girls, jobs, and being true to their reggae/ska roots. It's a very stripped down, basic sound, augmented occassionally with keyboards, bongos, produced beats, and what I think is a mellotron. Mostly though, it's acoustic guitar with the pick hand slapping against the fretboard for percussion, using reggae and ska rhythms. It's a novel sound, and as such, I think it'd go down better in smaller doses; the 14 songs, some of which run on for quite a while and several of which are repeated in remixes, feel like too much. The lyrics.... er, rhymes... won't dazzle anybody with mad word skills, but the emcees do make it all rhyme and stick to the beat. And they probably like girls who wear Abercrombie & Fitch. - Jim Testa
