Goodbye
Etc. – "Last Gasp" EP
(Independent)
Goodbye Etc. is a pop-punk band from Philadelphia
that is introducing itself to us with this 7-song
collection of skanking melodic rock. On “Last
Gasp”, the trio provides the listener
with tunes that deal with the boredom of everyday
life but are exceedingly catchy and upbeat sounding.
The immediate problem that I see here is not
so much the actual music – it is pretty
harmless and it’s hard to flat out dislike
something as catchy and memorable as this mini
album – but the fact that there are so
many bands out there playing this kind of music
already. To excel in this genre you really need
to be original, or you will get bogged down
with plenty of other groups that didn’t
make it.
Having said this, there is one quality that
makes Goodbye Etc. endearing to me and that
is the fact that they on plenty of occasions
remind me of Jimmy Eat World, a band I dearly
love. This stems from the heartfelt melodies
that to me sound sincere and could separate
them from the others.
If you need further explanation on how they
sound then just imagine this; the soundtrack
to a college movie or The Vans Warped Tour.
This will tell you whether you will enjoy Goodbye
Etc. or not.
They need to add more originality to their
sound but as far as beginnings go “Last
Gasp” is pretty promising. - Mirza Gazic
