Wow,
this record is amazing! From the opening riff
of the album, I knew I was in for a treat.
It opens with a sweet, bluesy riff and leads
way to a steady groove that doesn’t
let up till the song’s done. I guess
you can call this Stoner Rock but it definitely
has more to offer than just re-hashed Sabbath
and Kyuss riffs. There’s a certain Punky
edge to it, a certain rawness. The recording
is raw so that might be a contributing factor,
and the music itself is very loose, very jam-oriented,
not too worried about following conventional
rules for songwriting (which I absolutely
loved). The album features two guest vocalists,
one which sounds like Neil from Clutch and
the other identical to Chris Cornell. They
both handle vocal duties extremely well and
don’t sound out of place which helps
the flow of the album, which is another aspect
I really enjoyed. I think Josh Homme from
QOTSA should take a page out of these guys’
book, this is how it’s done, and I say
this because you can kinda hear some QOTSA
influences here and there but nothing obvious,
but definitely way more on key than anything
Josh has put out for a long time (just my
personal opinion). I also heard a few tracks
from a previous album and it was even better
to my surprise! Bottom line, if you like your
Stoner Rock a little more involved and original
pick this up and you’ll hear how bands
like these are keeping the genre alive but
most of all, fresh. –Phil P.
