MAZEFFECT
- Horeshoes & Hand Grenades (myspace.com/mazeffect)
If sheer energy and tunefulness is what you
look for in a band, than you've come to the
right place. Mazeffect insert loud guitar solos
between the slash 'n' burn verses, and on a
track like "Operational You," they
wrap warped, and warbly guitars around a theremin
(a type of synthesizer). Spiky, two-guitar indie
punk rock with fresh, and well conceived songs
that at times will immediately draw a likeness
to Dramarama, The Dead Milkmen, or even Stiff
Little Fingers.
On "Some of Shelly's Blues" they turn
the echo chamber up to 11, giving an otherwise
sorrowful song of unrequited love into an even
darker melodrama. What it all adds up to is
glorious power-pop punk with the emphasis squarely
on power. Mazeffect are like a strong dose of
electroshock that will get you up off your lazy
duff to these shakin' grooves. I would imagine
that their live show would make you bop 'til
you drop! - Phil Rainone
