Man,
I actually had high hopes for this band. They
were once my favorite but started putting
out uninspired album after album and lost
me. I would say the last album they put out
that was solid all the way through was 1997’s
From the Underground and Below. They have
not been able to get it back together: too
many groove-oriented riffs, and too many line-up
changes (which leads to too many different
styles clashing). This album opens with a
promise and you think it’s gonna deliver
but unfortunately it does not. The first two
tracks are actually pretty decent, the first
being better than the second but then…
on track 3 they make the inexcusable mistake
of asking the douche bag singer from Lamb
of God to help Blitz (who needs no help from
anyone, especially not this new-jack cock-smoker)
with vocals! So not only is this a fuckin’
horror show all in itself but on the inside
of the advance copy I got, there’s a
little blurb by said retard all about how
to be true Metal, blah blah blah (look kid,
no one cares what you have to say, step aside
a let real Thrashers show ya how it’s
done). Anyway, back to record (sorry, that
guy irritates me to no end), so tracks 3 through
7 pretty much eat penis; they are bland, boring,
and do not really go anywhere (it’s
almost like Lamb of God helped them write
these songs). However they redeem themselves
on tracks 8-10. Tracks 8 & 9 alternate
between mid-paced thrashers and full-on speed
assaults to get the blood flowing and the
head banging, and they finish off with Overkill
V…The Brand. This song, as you might
have guessed is number five in a series of
songs called Overkill and this one, while
being my least favorite, still has that same
edge all the other four have. Those in the
know will also hear a little part of a riff
from Overkill II in one of the verses of this
song which I thought was pretty interesting.
Well, there ya have it, it’s not the
old stuff but it sure beats a lot of the albums
they’ve done since ’97. I just
wish they would have more of the good parts
they have on this album repeating throughout
other songs, so I wouldn’t have to skip
through 5 songs to get to the good ones AT
THE END!!! It could’ve been an EP I
guess is what I’m ultimately saying.
