THE SOULSHAKE EXPRESS - EP (Beatville)

Dang! The Soulshake Express sound like they were vaccinated with a phonograph needle that had just got done playing a lot of early AC/DC, Deep Purple, and a whole slew of contemporary bands like Wolfmother, and The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion. From Sweden, and previously unavailable in the U.S., The Soulshake Express literally inject these influences into their style of playing, giving them a fresh coat of paint. With big riffs ("Feel It") and nasty kiss-offs ("Dirty Woman,") this four song EP will leave you wanting more (and you'll get it -- Beatville is releasing a full-length in the U.S. in November.) Their straightforward approach and succinct tunes make for freewheeling fun, channeling some very interesting influences. They're at their nastiest on the hard-riffing, bare bones "Whiskey and the Blues." The Soulshake Express offers more than a lot of bands out there, and these songs should go well with a beer or six.- Phil Rainone
