GOOD
RIDDANCE - "Capricorn One: Singles and Rarities"
CD, vinyl, and deluxe edition with photo book (Fat Wreck
Chords)
While Good Riddance did indeed play their final show back
in 2007, this new release features exactly what the title
says: Singles, comp tracks and even some unreleased cuts.
Fans of this California hardcore band will of course want
to pick this up, having all the non-LP stuff in one neat little
package. The casual fan might be better off picking up some
of Good Riddance's more vital output like 1999's Operation
Phoenix, as lots of this early stuff shows a band trying
to find their sound. A cut like "Not So Bad" shows
the band under a heavy early BAD RELIGION influence, while
"Great Experiment" effectively apes later BAD RELIGION,
and "What We Have" documents the introduction of
NYHC style's to the band's palette. While not the most important
music the band would make in their decade long career, even
the more pedestrian cuts on Capricorn One still show
an undeniable sincerity and love em or hate em, no one ever
can question the dedication and DIY beliefs of this departed
Santa Cruz band.
PSYCHO - Complete Studio Recordings (1982-1986) - (Welfare
Records, www.welfarerecords.net.)
Bless their hearts, PSYCHO were an active, prolific, Massachusetts
hardcore band in the mid eighties, unfortunately they were
also generic and unremarkable. While the band's entire recorded
output is lovingly assembled here with a nice package and
all, the world needs 45 tracks of PSYCHO like a hole in
the head. We weren't listening in 1986 and some things never
change.
