Mama Coco's Funky Kitchen Sets Brooklyn On Fire
Things got so hot the Fire Department showed up and shut
the whole thing down, but for a few sweaty, fun hours, three
of the premier bands from Mama Coco's Funky Kitchen put
on one hell of a show at a new DIY space in Brooklyn called
the Mezz. The event was a fundraising kickoff for the Exquisite
Corpse Company, a new theater company that hopes to
be presenting more events like this as well as its own stage
productions.
Pretty much everything that could go wrong did go wrong
- the place didn't have air conditioning and it was a 100
degree, super-humid day, so the place was a sauna as soon
as a few people started showing up. The p.a. was thrown
together at the least minute and kept overheating, which
turned Ghost Pal's set into a technical trainwreck. But
there were $2 beer and cheap shots, and The Great American
Novel and Sons of An Illustrious Father played awesome sets,
showing off the deep and impressive pool of talent coming
out of this small studio. Just as Sons of An Illustrious'
Father's set was winding down, the Fire Dept. showed up
en masse and shut the show down, although reports that the
room was dangerously overcrowded were simply not true. The
Harmonica Lewinskies, alas, didn't get to play, although
they will be performing in Manhattan next week as part of
the CBGB Festival. Check out our feature on Mama
Coco's and enjoy these photos.
